KONVOI joint project

Goods traffic is continuously on the increase. Transport capacities must therefore be utilised better and traffic flow improved further. New technologies are intended to take this development into account: They relieve the strain on the driver, increase traffic safety and reduce fuel consumption.

This is where the KONVOI joint project comes in. The aim is to develop and analyse the use of truck convoys on roads with the aid of driver assistance systems.

The research project is based on findings from previous European and national projects, in which theoretical principles, possible use scenarios and legal aspects were already taken into consideration. The KONVOI project will concern itself with research using real and virtual road tests into the reduction of fuel consumption and emissions as well into the impact on traffic safety. In addition, the acceptance of such a system will be examined in road tests. Furthermore, research will also be conducted into how drivers cope with convoy driving.

Within the framework of the project a total of 4 truck test specimens will be equipped by the individual joint partners with the necessary information and automation technology for the purpose of realising convoys of different lengths on motorways/freeways. Once the system has been sufficiently tested in the driving simulator and on the test track, the system is to be tested under realistic conditions.
