Onboarding week

Your trainee programme begins with an orientation week in which all trainees of our commercial vehicle brands take part, as well as an introductory seminar. During this time, you will get to know and understand the overall strategy and orientation of VW Truck & Bus. You will also gain an initial insight into the different areas of our company, so that you can really get started straight away.

Deployment in the home area

With your application for a specific advertised position in one of our seven board departments, you determine your home area and thus the start of your exciting development in our company. This is where you will spend the first 3 months.

Departmental rotation

We want to give you the greatest possible creative freedom for your own ideas, which is why every trainee path is different. Together with your mentor, you decide which functional areas you will work in. Since you will receive interim feedback after each station, you will determine the further course based on your individual potentials and strengths and develop them further in the next modules.

General questions about the Trainee Programme

  • WHAT IS THE DIFFERENCE BETWEEN THE TRAINEE PROGRAMME AND DIRECT ENTRY?

The focus of a trainee programme is on learning and the development of personal and technical skills. The trainee obtains an oversight in a range of corporate divisions and becomes familiar with the company’s strategic direction and priorities. Professional development and the establishment of a personal network promote both expertise and individual performance. The priority in a case of direct entry is conversely placed on rapid and deep familiarisation with the specific job.

  • HOW LONG DOES A TRAINEE PROGRAMME LAST?

The MAN Global Trainee Programme gives you the opportunity of intensive professional development for a period of 15 months.

  • WHICH CORPORATE DIVISIONS DO YOU GET TO SEE VIA THE TRAINEE PROGRAMME?

We want our trainees to obtain a comprehensive and in-depth insight into our company. Trainees themselves help to actively and individually shape our trainee programme. A trainee plan is jointly produced with a mentor and the trainee supervisor. It contains certain fixed stepping stones, such as the chosen department, a deployment in Production, in Sales and in the currently prioritised Digitisation department. Other assignments in the trainee programme are jointly determined to give trainees the greatest possible creative freedom for their own ideas.

  • IN WHICH CORPORATE DIVISIONS CAN A TRAINEE PROGRAMME BE COMPLETED?

The trainee programme is in principle offered in each of our seven corporate divisions (see the information on the careers page). Free trainee positions are advertised once a year in April. These free trainee positions are based on the strategic orientation of the company, so the departments on offer can vary from year to year.

  • CAN A TRAINEE PROGRAMME ALSO BE COMPLETED ABROAD?

The advertised positions always relate to a specific position at a fixed location. Our programme tends to fill positions in our headquarters in Munich and sometimes also in our engine factory in Nuremberg. The trainee programme does however include an obligatory stint at an international location of the TRATON Group.

  • WHAT IS THE SALARY AS A TRAINEE?

All trainees at MAN start with the entry level salary for direct entrants under the IG Metall collective agreement. We are happy to discuss precise salary details in the context of the personal selection day.

  • WHAT IS THE WORKING TIME MODEL FOR THE TRAINEE PROGRAMME?

Our trainees have a 35 hour employment contract (currently). The value we place on giving employees a lot of personal freedom means that our trainees naturally have the option of using flexible working to organise their working day.

  • WHAT OPPORTUNITIES ARE AVAILABLE AT MAN AFTER THE TRAINEE PROGRAMME?

We take great care in selecting the participants in the MAN trainee programme and are also keen to retain these motivated talents in our company after successful completion of the programme. That’s why we provide all our trainees with extensive know-how and useful tools and skills during the programme. You are also given the opportunity of establishing a wide network within the company. This means that you’re subsequently well prepared for a potential career with us.

  • WHO CAN I CONTACT IF I HAVE QUESTIONS ABOUT THE TRAINEE PROGRAMME?

Our trainee representative Daniela Peschke from the Talent Management department is available to answer any questions not answered by our FAQs. She can be contacted via: daniela.peschke@man.eu, or by phone +49 152 06857977

  • CAN YOU HELP WITH FINDING ACCOMMODATION IN MUNICH?

Given the housing market situation in Munich, we are unfortunately unable to assist in finding accommodation. There are though sometimes internal options through the network of trainees and former trainees who may be able to help.

  • IS THERE AN INFORMATION DAY OR INTRODUCTORY EVENT FOR THE TRAINEE PROGRAMME?

All new employees start their first day at work with a joint introductory event. The trainee programme additionally starts with a separate introductory seminar where the trainees learn more about our company and the different departments.

  • HOW MANY MONTHS IN ADVANCE CAN YOU APPLY FOR THE TRAINEE PROGRAMME?

The application process starts every year in the first quarter when the vacancies are advertised. The application deadline for a specific trainee position can be found in the respective job advertisement, but as a guideline it is approximately four weeks after the advertisement. In 2023, the positions are advertised in March for approx. 4 weeks.

  • WHICH DOCUMENTS NEED TO BE INCLUDED WITH MY APPLICATION?

We need the application to contain a compelling CV and a letter of motivation, along with your school-leaving certificate or most recent transcript of grades. You are also welcome to include other certificates or internship records, etc. that may assist us with our selection.

  • DOES THE APPLICANT RECEIVE FEEDBACK REGARDING AN UNSUCCESSFUL APPLICATION?

Questions about the trainee programme

  • WILL I RECEIVE INTERIM FEEDBACK DURING THE TRAINEE PROGRAMME?

The exchange of feedback is an essential component of our programme. Trainees receive feedback after each of the programmes modules, so they can speak with their mentor to identify potentials and strengths and build on them as they develop.

  • WHAT IS THE NATURE OF SUPERVISION DURING THE PROGRAMME?

Each trainee receives optimal supervision. This support is provided by mentors from the chosen departments. They help with any problems, give feedback, assist with establishing a network and provide the trainee with guidance. Our trainee supervisors are also available to assist all trainees.

  • IS IT POSSIBLE TO HELP SHAPE THE PROGRAMME?

Your own commitment and active shaping are essential in our trainee programme. We specify the framework and thus the ideal starting conditions, the individual pathway and the full exploitation of every potential and opportunity is down to the trainee.

  • IS THERE A NETWORK OF TRAINEES WITHIN THE COMPANY?

We see close networking among trainees as being very important. Joint projects and activities, also socially, improve team performance and team spirit. This network also extends to former trainees who are able to provide useful tips and additional information. Extending your network to other trainees working at commercial vehicle brands of the VW Group is also encouraged.

  • IS AN INTERNATIONAL DEPLOYMENT DURING THE TRAINEE PROGRAMME POSSIBLE AND HOW LONG WOULD THIS LAST?

The trainee programme includes an obligatory stint at an international location of the VW Group. This stay abroad lasts around three months depending on the local project involvement.
