An electric drive is a drive that propels a vehicle by means of an electric machine (also called an e-machine). This e-machine uses electrical induction to convert electrical energy into mechanical energy.
These e-machines are usually powered by electrical energy storage units, such as lithium-ion batteries or double-layer capacitors, which can be recharged by means of external charging.
Alternatively, the energy supply can be provided permanently or in sections, for example via external overhead line systems (trolley buses).
In the case of an electric central drive on commercial vehicles, as deployed at MAN, it is an electric motor that drives the cardan shaft and rear axle.
