Winner: the MAN Lion’s City E is Bus of the Year 2023

It won over customers and experts alike: the MAN Lion’s City E is Bus of the Year 2023. The electric bus won the accolade at IAA Transportation in Hanover.

Leading the way with range, reliability, comfort and sustainability: the MAN Lion’s City 12 E has been a favourite among operators, bus drivers and passengers throughout Europe since 2020 – and has more than 1,000 orders from a wide range of countries to prove it. The international 'Bus & Coach of the Year' jury had a positive feeling from the first test drive - right through to the decision that the MAN Lion's City 12 E is the Bus of the Year 2023.

Award at IAA Transportation

Rudi Kuchta, Head of the Bus Business Unit at MAN Truck & Bus, accepted the prize from the chair of the jury, Tom Terjesen, at the VDA Stars of the Year event during the opening ceremony of IAA Transportation 2022 in Hanover. “The new MAN Lion’s City 12 E have a ground-breaking design, high grade of comfort and a very quiet area inside,” Terjesen said. “The drives cabin is one of the best on the marked and with high grade of safety. The International Bus & Coach of the Year Jury had a positive feeling from the first test drive and up to the decision that MAN Lion’s City 12 E is the Bus of the Year 2023.”

The award has been running for more than 30 years and is one of the most significant international prizes in the bus industry. “We are all the more proud because our MAN Lion’s City E made such an impression on the trade jury and we have been awarded this prestigious honour,” said Kuchta. “The award impressively shows the outstanding work that the entire MAN team has put into the bus. At the same time, it is another incredible new chapter in the success story of our MAN Lion’s City E.”

From Munich to Ireland: driving to the “Bus Euro Test” in an eBus

In May 2022, the expert jury welcomed five bus manufacturers from across Europe to the Bus Euro Test, an international comparison test in Limerick, Ireland. The MAN Lion’s City 12 E had impressed the experts before the event even started by making a journey of some 2,500 kilometres from Germany to Ireland under its own steam. The twelve-metre-long city bus travelled through eight countries in ten days during the Electrifying Europe tour. It covered a total of 2,448.8 kilometres and used 1,763.7 kWh of energy –  without having to recharge even once during a stage. These outstanding values were achieved thanks to the efficient technology used by the Lion’s City E, with a remarkable regeneration rate of 20.8 per cent.

Lion’s City E with two range strategies

And the best is about to get even better. The experts at MAN Truck & Bus are continuously working to develop the fully electric Lion’s City E still further. To make it even easier for public transport operators to tailor their eBus to its future use, MAN offers two battery usage options on the Lion’s City E: in addition to the Reliable Range option (range of up to 270 km), buyers can also choose the Maximum Range strategy to give them up to 350 km. On top of that, the new CO2 air conditioning system and improved heating circulation make it even more efficient.

Modular battery packs and Midibus version offer greater flexibility

The modular batteries are another new addition. From autumn 2022, customers will be able to specify the number of battery packs, enabling them to customise the Lion’s City E even more to better suit their requirements in terms of range and passenger capacity. MAN also has another alternative to offer when it comes to size. The Lion’s City E is now available as a short, 10.5-metre Midibus version with the biggest battery capacity in its segment, alongside the existing 12.2- and 18.1-metre versions. The Midibus is the ideal solution for narrow city centres and busy pedestrian areas with its record-breaking turning circle and compact dimensions.

The Lion’s City E has also won awards for its design

“Right from the start, we insisted on working closely with our customers to develop our eBus, and on continuing to optimise it. Our aim is, and has always been, to offer the best electric city bus. The fact that our efforts have been honoured by the market and many experts is a great success,” says Barbaros Oktay, Head of Bus Engineering at MAN Truck & Bus. The electric city bus previously won the iF Gold Award in 2020 for its ergonomic and aesthetically pleasing design.

MAN offers eBus chassis for the international market

Rudi Kuchta stated that many more MAN electric buses are set to hit the streets for the public transport of the future – following the NewMAN strategy and its three key aspects, Zero Emission, Digitalisation and Automation: “In the last financial year, almost six per cent of our new city buses were electric. That figure is set to rise to half by 2025. And we’re assuming that by 2030 around 90 per cent of our city buses will be supplied with battery power.”

The reliable technology from the MAN Lion’s City E will also be used elsewhere in the future. “To meet the increasing demand for electric buses around the world and to make a significant contribution towards sustainable mobility, we offer the MAN electric bus solution for international markets outside Europe in the shape of our eBus chassis,” says Kuchta. This gives body manufacturers the perfect basis for their fully electric models.

Twelfth honour for MAN Truck & Bus

Since 1989, the jury of European trade journalists has awarded the titles Bus of the Year and Coach of the Year to different types of buses on an alternating annual basis. The main focus is always on the practicality and conceptual ideas of the vehicles. Including the current award for the MAN Lion’s City 12 E, MAN Truck & Bus has proudly lifted the trophy for its MAN and NEOPLAN bus brands twelve times now – six times for the Coach of the Year (2022, 2020, 2006, 2004, 2000, 1994) and six for the Bus of the Year (2023, 2015, 2005, 1999, 1995, 1990).
