MAN Latin America: 100,000 buses produced in 19 years

MAN Latin America has a longterm tradition in the bus market. Over the last 19 years over 100,000 bus chassis were produced in Brazil and sold to 30 countries in Latin America, Africa and the Middle East. The products under the brand name Volksbus are manufactured in Resende, Southern Rio de Janeiro, where one of the most modern assembly lines for trucks and buses adopts a unique production concept: the Consórcio Modular (Modular Consortium), where seven partner suppliers are also directly involved in manufacture of the products.

Runner-up in the Brazilian bus market, MAN Latin America entered this segment in 1993 with the Volksbus 16.180 CO, a front-engine urban chassis. Together with it, the company innovated with an exclusive after-sales service inside the customers’ garages. Today a full line is offered, from micro buses to interstate models – three of them are powered by MAN D08 engines, which meet the P-7 exhaust-gas standard (comparable to Euro V).

Among MAN Latin America's most impressive sales a remarkable achievement was the 7,000 buses deal with the Brazilian Government for students’ transportation to public schools nationwide in the last five years. In 2011 the company reached a historical registrations record in Brazil with 11,139 bus chassis (against 7,523 units licensed in 2010). Customized solutions are also offered, like an urban articulated chassis for urban corridors and an off-road bus for rough-condition routes like those in the Amazon region.

Volksbus 9.150

The Volksbus 9.150 is aimed at the minibus market. It's perfect for both demanding inner-city routes as well as for intercity trips that demand a combination of sturdiness, durability, flexibility and a larger transport volume. For fee-paying transportation it is possible to install a door in front of the front axle, increasing the volume of the interior and offering space for additional seats. Suitable for bodies of up to 8.50 m in length, with suspension, reinforced chassis, robust brakes and a greater load capacity on the axles.

Volksbus 17.230

The chassis is the Volksbus bestseller in the Brazilian Market and was specially developed for high-volume public transport but also as a fee-paying transport solution. With a four-cylinder engine, 225 hp and a low engine speed, the components are protected and therefore last longer. The chassis, suspension and strong axles make this the ideal vehicle for difficult applications.

Volksbus 17.280 OT with dual-fuel technology

At the IAA Commercial Vehicles 2012, MAN Latin America is presenting the Volksbus 17.280 OT with dual-fuel technology. The heart of this vehicle is an electronic system that enables the simultaneous control of both natural-gas and diesel injection. This bus is a particularly environmentally friendly solution for local public transport because the emission of CO2 is significantly reduced, especially when biogas is used. Thanks to the dual-fuel principle, the vehicle can be run on diesel alone, which means that it is not restricted to operating in areas with a gas supply.

Development of the Volksbus 17.280 OT with dual-fuel technology is part of the Rio Sustainable Transport Program. Its objective is ensure more efficient and sustainable passenger transport for the 2014 World Cup and 2016 Olympic Games in Rio de Janeiro and the surrounding region. MAN Latin America deployed similar vehicles for use as shuttle buses at the international Conference on Sustainable Development Rio+20 in June 2012.
